Hymns To The Pope

Mary Ann Collins
(A Former Catholic Nun)

March 2003

The Catholic Church has a long tradition of singing hymns to the Pope. You can buy recordings of them online. [Note 1]

I thought you might like to see a modern papal hymn for yourself. If you go to the link below, you will see the words of a papal hymn. (It is on a Catholic website and is part of a section honoring the Pope.)

In January 1999, the Pope visited Saint Louis, Missouri. There was a solemn Papal Mass on January 27. When the Pope made his entrance, a papal hymn was sung in his honor. You can buy the music from this Papal Mass online. [Note 2]

NOTES

1. A Vatican concern was performed in honor of Pope Benedict XIV. It included the papal hymn “Tu Es Petrus” by Franz Liszt. To buy this CD online, do a search for “Vatican concert” + “Pope Benedict”.

2. Music for a solemn Papal Mass which was held in Saint Louis on January 27, 1999. During the "Entrance of Holy Father" a papal hymn entitled "Tu Es Petrus" ("You Are Peter") was sung by the choir.
