THE POPE KNEELING BEFORE A STATUE OF MARY Pope John Paul II kneels before a statue of Our Lady of Fatima. This same statue is carried in a huge candlelight procession in Fatima, Portugal. Because it is night time, it is difficult to see the people, but you can see the light from the candles they are holding. You can also see the clergymen who are walking in front of the statue, which is on a litter, carried on men’s shoulders.
STATUES WHICH DOMINATE CHAPELS The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception has many shrines that are devoted to Mary. You can go to their website and take their “virtual tour.” (Look for “Virtual Tour” or “Tour” and click on it. ) I recommend starting with the Upper Church. Be sure to see the chapel of Our Lady of Siluva. Notice how large the statue is compared to the crucifix that is underneath its feet. If you also look at the Crypt Church, be sure to look at the statue of Mary the “Mother of Mankind,” which has many large candles burning in front of it. (If this link doesn’t work, then do an Internet search for “National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception”.) This has a small picture. Click on it and it will give you a much larger picture. Notice how large the statue is compared to the altar and the chapel. Underneath the feet of the statue is a Tabernacle with consecrated Hosts (which the Catholic Church claims are the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ). (If this link doesn’t work, then do an Internet search for “Miraculous Medal” + shrine + tour.)
For more information about statues, with links to pictures, see my article “Statues.”
