Son of a slave woman; he could not enter any religious orders. The astute Martin asked to be a servant boy at the Dominican Convent and was admitted. Saint Martin took care of the sick and helped as a barber. In due time he was accepted into the Third Order of the Dominicans. He became a saint serving in the kitchen and cleaning. In this beautifully carved sterling silver medal he is depicted with a broom and dogs because he would treat them with dignity. His humility and love were the way to attaining his goals.
